What is Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It is caused by wear and tear due to excessive use over the years or to old injuries in the affected joints. It commonly affects people over 60 years of age.

Which joints are affected?

Osteoarthritis mostly affects the large weight-bearing joints like the knees, hips and spine, causing pain and stiffness which are worst at the end of the day. The affected person may have difficulty in walking, climbing stairs, squatting or kneeling.

Treatment for Osteoarthritis

Weight Control - If you are overweight, losing some weight will reduce the strain on your hips and knees.

Physiotherapy and Exercise - Working with your physiotherapist is important for maintaining strength in the muscles around the joints and reducing stiffness in the affected joints. You should also exercise regularly to keep fit. Choose exercises (e.g. swimming) which do not strain your joints.

Relieving of Pain - heat treatment and medication - There are a number of ways to relieve pain or reduce pain - through the use of medication or sometimes your physiotherapist may us some form of heat treatment or electrical treatment to relieve pain or reduce stiffness. However do note that there are many possible and documented side effects if medications are taken long term.

Relieving of Pain - BioBeam 940 - We strongly recommend the use of BioBeam 940 - which is a low level narrow band infra red light to relieve pain. BioBeam 940 is absolutely safe, does not emit heat, has no side effects even during long term usage, is non-invasive and has no contra indications when used with any medications or physiotherapy.

Possible explanations of the neuro-pharmacological analgesic effects of photo (light) stimulation are well documented. In cases, when photo-therapy is applied to key points on the surface of the skin, muscle tension can be released and circulation of blood can be increased.  Stimulating these key points triggers the release of endorphins which are neuro-chemicals that relieve pain (1).  With the release of this chemical comes the relief of pain and reduced inflammation along with increase in the blood flow and oxygen supply to the affected area. In addition, photo-therapy appears to modulate the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and acetylcholine which are known to play important roles in pain attenuation.
