The BioStick device is a breakthrough in the treatment of mouth ulcers and is based on the phototherapy principal alone with no chemical or pharmacological substances involved.

The etiology of RAS is unknown. In about 30% of the patients there is a positive family history.
About 10-20% of the patients have a low serum level of either Iron, Ferritin, Folate, Vit B12 or Ca. and therefore investigation of all patients with RAS should include these parameters.
Some have Coeliac disease, and RAS may be the only clinical manifestation of the disease.

Pre-disposing factors includes stress and trauma, and there are known associations of RAS to gastro-intestinal problems.

There are 3 types of lesions:

1. Minor Aphthous Ulcers (less than 5mm in diameter) – Account for 80% of all RAS.
2. Major Aphthous Ulcers (larger than 1cm in diameter) – Account for 10% of all cases.
3. Herpetiform Ulcers (characterized by 2-3mm ulcers that fuse into very large ulcers) – Affect mainly women and account for 10% of all cases.

Until recently therapy for RAS was not very satisfactory and included mainly topical cortico-steroids and various mouthwash solutions which did not shorten significantly the duration of healing nor reduced the pain.

In the last few years, phototherapy treatments led to extremely good results in various skin diseases including ulcers. SyroLight LTD, which is a leading provider of phototherapeutic medical devices, managed to utilize proprietary low level narrow band light technology for the treatment of mouth lesions.

It was shown already in the past that red light at a wave length of 630 nm stimulates fibroblasts proliferation and mediators of wound repair and promotes the healing of inflammatory processes.

The BioStick is a completely safe device, very easy to manipulate, by the size of a tooth brush that provides a drug free completely safe treatment in the comfort of one`s home.

The recent study has proven significant shortening of healing duration from RAS in addition to significant pain relief.
