Ease of Pain and Disability

Ease of Pain and Disability in Elderly Patients with Degenerative Osteoarthritis of the knee treated by Narrow-Band Light Therapy (BioBeam).          easeofpain

Tel-Aviv University, Sackler Faculty of Medicine Department of Physical Therapy.
By Jean Stilian MD, E.Cohen, RPT, M. Finkelstien RPT

Objective :

This single blind study examines 2 treatment methods for Degenerative Osteoarthritis (DOA) of the knee. One is the conventional Physiotherapy and the other is the use of BioBeam 940nm low level narrow band light illumination of the knee combined with conventional Physiotherapy. The attempt to test the efficacy of BioBeam was motivated by the wish to find an additional treatment method to help ease chronic pain and functional disability in patients who suffer from DOA of the knee.

Method :

One group receives only conventional physiotherapy while the other group receives both conventional physiotherapy and BioBeam 940nm light illumination. Both groups receive treatment 3 times a week for 2 weeks.

Results :

Results shown a significant improvement in both groups during the treatment itself. But improvement is retained for more than a month after check-up test only by the group which receives both physiotherapy and BioBeam 940nm illumination, whereas the group that receives only physiotherapy showed regression to almost pre-treatment state.
